Mini Mart Celebrates 50 Years in Business.

As told to writer Vicki Audette by Mini Mart owners Sylvia Fritz Dobbs and David Fritz

Connected to the Hill Country.
From its inception until now, the people of Mini Mart have served the people of the Hill Country by knowing and caring for their daily needs. In 1973, Jr. Fritz and wife, Ann opened their first Mini Mart store in Kerrville, Texas. The idea of owning a chain of stores had its beginnings when Jr. and Ann owned Fritz Grocery and Market, in Center Point, Texas. While working side by side, the young couple was living behind the store and raising their children Sylvia, and David. Jr. and Ann’s engaging customer service and the store’s family environment led to a popular shopping destination in downtown Center Point. As Fritz Grocery prospered, they began to explore expansion opportunities. A pivotal moment came when Jr. Fritz heard about a relatively new concept—the ‘convenience’ store—the couple pursued this venture, and it was not long before Fritz Grocery and Market would transform into a chain of Mini Mart convenient stores.

Jr. and Ann are both gone now, but their legacy lives on.
In 2013, Sylvia Fritz Dobbs and David Fritz, followed in their family’s footsteps and took over ownership of Hill Country Mini Mart, LP. The business partners lead through strategic planning, and a shared vision supported by their spouses, Razor Dobbs, and Stacy Fritz. Today, 18 Mini Mart stores are located nearby in communities throughout the Hill Country, Bandera, Center Point, Comfort, Fredericksburg, Ingram, and Kerrville.

A big part of Mini Mart’s 50 Year success.
Hospitality is rooted in the Mini Mart culture. It extends from each of its 200 team members—store managers, administrative and maintenance staff, and leaders—to its customers who make Mini Mart stores part of their daily routine. Sylvia and David credit Jr. and Ann for teaching them the ins and outs of running a successful business through truly caring for people. ‘Our parents shared their gift of hospitality. It’s why today we are celebrating 50 years in business.’ In 2018, The Kerrville Chamber of Commerce recognized Sylvia Fritz Dobbs and David Fritz with the Business Persons of the Year Award.

Giving back in gratitude to our Volunteer Fire Departments.
The Fritz family invests in its Mini Mart customers and communities in all sorts of ways. As part of Mini Mart’s 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2023, all their stores are participating in raising donations to support the local Volunteer Fire Departments. “50 years ago, our father and founder, Jr. Fritz, served as a Center Point Fire Department volunteer, when our parents opened their first Mini Mart,” said Sylvia. “It’s what neighbors do. We care and support one another.” Today Sylvia’s husband Razor Dobbs, is an active volunteer. “Working shoulder to shoulder with my Center Point Fire Department brothers and sisters,” said Dobbs, “is the most rewarding work I’ve ever been a part of.” Mini Mart owners, Sylvia Fritz Dobbs and David Fritz personally contributed $15,000 to kick-off the VFD fundraiser. Thanks to the generosity of Mini Mart’s Customers, Business Partners and Neighbors, we were able to give a total of $119,000 to 21 local VFDs.

In 1973, Our Father & Mini Mart Founder, Jr. Fritz was a Center Point Fire Department Volunteer.

My brother David and I learned from of our parents how important it is to serve and contribute to the wellbeing of our communities. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we are proud to announce the Mini Mart 50th Volunteer Fire Department Fundraiser will give over $119,000 to the local VFDs in Kerr, Gillespie, Bandera and Kendall Counties. We appreciate our Customers, Business Partners, Friends, and Neighbors—who also know how important it is to give back in gratitude to the communities we live and work in. Thanks everyone for keeping Mini Mart a part of your daily routine for 50 years!

Since opening in 1973, Mini Mart has consistently supported our local Volunteer Fire Departments. Jr. Fritz as a volunteer fire fighter, saw firsthand how essential each department is to the community it serves. Today, through volunteer service and financial support the Mini Mart family continues the legacy that Jr. Fritz began. Sylvia Fritz Dobbs’ husband, Razor Dobbs is a Center Point Fire Department Volunteer.
